About Leucostrophus alterhirundo D'Abrera

Leucostrophus alterhirundo is a moth species belonging to the family Sphingidae. This moth occurs from Ethiopia and Somalia in the north, extending south to Zambia and Malawi. Its wingspan measures 39 to 48 millimeters. On the upperside of the abdomen, a pale belt sits on the fourth and fifth abdominal tergites. This belt is chalky white, and does not show a bluish tint unless its scales have been rubbed away. On the underside of the abdomen, white colour gradually fades toward the end, leaving the posterior half a clayish shade rather than black. Both the forewings and hindwings are a paler shade of slate grey than the wings of the closely related species Leucostrophus commasiae. The larvae of Leucostrophus alterhirundo feed on plants from the genus Strychnos.
