About Leuconotopicus arizonae (Hargitt, 1886)

Arizona woodpeckers, with the scientific name Leuconotopicus arizonae (Hargitt, 1886), are nearly identical to Strickland's woodpeckers, growing to a length of about 7 to 8 inches, which equals 18 to 20 centimeters. Their plumage is mainly brown and white: they are brown on their upper body with a dark rump, and have white underparts dotted with brown spots. Arizona woodpeckers usually have white bars on their wings, along with two white stripes across their face that join another white bar on their neck. Male Arizona woodpeckers have a red patch on the nape of the head that is absent in females. The call of the Arizona woodpecker is a sharp, squeaky keech, and the species also produces a rattle call of descending, grating notes.
