About Leuconotopicus albolarvatus (Cassin, 1850)
This species, commonly known as the white-headed woodpecker, has a scientific name of Leuconotopicus albolarvatus (Cassin, 1850). Adults are approximately 20 cm (7.9 in) long, with an entirely black body and a white head. Their white primary feathers form a visible crescent shape when the bird is in flight. Male individuals have a distinct red spot on the back of the head. The species' range extends through mountainous regions from British Columbia to southern California. They build their nests in dead trees or snags, and reproduce once each year.
