About Leucolepis acanthoneura (Schwägr.) Lindb.
Leucolepis acanthoneura (Schwägr.) Lindb. is a species of moss belonging to the family Mniaceae. It has two common names: leucolepis umbrella moss and Menzies' tree moss, the second of which comes from its taxonomic synonym, Leucolepis menziesii. This moss is endemic to the Pacific Coast region of Canada and the United States. It is frequently found in moist lowland rainforests, where it can form large populations growing on logs, boulders, wet organic soil, compacted soil, and humus. Occasionally, it also grows upward onto the lower portions of tree trunks. Individual plants are light green, glossy, tree-shaped, and grow to a height of approximately 4 to 8 cm (1.6 to 3.1 inches). Their stems grow upright, with a circle of branches forming at the stem tips. The Saanich people used this moss to create yellow dye for dyeing their baskets.
