About Leucadendron loranthifolium (Knight) I.Williams
Leucadendron loranthifolium, commonly called the green-flower sunbush, is a flowering shrub in the genus Leucadendron that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This plant is native to the Western Cape of South Africa, where it grows in the Gifberg, Cederberg, Sandveld, and Hex River Mountains. The shrub reaches 2.0 meters (6.6 feet) tall and blooms from July to September. The entire plant dies after wildfires, but its seeds survive. The seeds are stored in a cone on the female plant, and fall out of the cone onto the soil after two months, after which they are spread by rodents. The species is unisexual, with separate individual plants that bear either male or female flowers, which are pollinated by small beetles. It grows in sandy or rocky sandstone soils at altitudes between 80 and 1000 meters. In Afrikaans, this species is called Botterknoppietolbos, and its national tree number is 81.5.
