About Leucadendron elimense E.Phillips

This shrub species has the scientific name Leucadendron elimense E.Phillips, and it is called Elim-tolbos in Afrikaans.

It grows to 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) tall. Plants are killed by fire, but their seeds survive to regenerate after burning. Flowering occurs from July to September each year.

The species is unisexual: individual plants produce only male or only female flowers. Pollination is carried out by small insects.

Seeds are stored in a toll on female plants, and only fall to the ground two months after flowers ripen. It is possible that rodents collect these seeds.

This species grows on the Elim Plain, ranging from Gansbaai to Bredasdorp. It grows mainly in shallow soil at elevations between 10 and 170 meters (33 to 558 feet) above sea level.
