About Leucadendron cinereum (Sol. ex Aiton) R.Br.
Leucadendron cinereum, commonly called the scraggly conebush, is a flowering shrub in the genus Leucadendron that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This plant is native to the Western Cape, South Africa, where it occurs from Hopefield across the Cape Flats, ranging from the Berg River estuary to Kraaifontein. The shrub grows to a height of 1 meter and produces flowers in October. The entire plant dies after a fire, but its seeds survive. The seeds are stored in a cone on the female plant; they fall to the ground after a fire, and may potentially be spread by wind. This is a unisexual species, with separate individual plants bearing either male or female flowers. Its flowers are pollinated by insects. It grows in level, sandy soil at altitudes between 15 and 100 meters. In Afrikaans, this species is called vaalknopbos.
