Lethocerus maximus is a species of giant water bug classified in the genus Lethocerus, first formally described by De Carlo in 1938. This species is native to South America, and populations can also be found in the Caribbean. Along with its close relative Lethocerus grandis, Lethocerus maximus ranks among the largest true bugs found on Earth. Individual Lethocerus maximus can grow to a maximum length of 11.5 centimeters, equal to 4.53 inches.
