Lethocerus americanus (Leidy, 1847) is a species of giant water bug belonging to the family Belostomatidae. It has several common names: electric light bug, toe biter, and fish killer. This species is native to southern Canada and the United States, occurring north of 35°N; other species of the genus Lethocerus are found in regions further south. Adult individuals typically reach a total length of 5 to 6 centimeters, or 2.0 to 2.4 inches. Originally, this species was classified under the genus Belostoma.
