About Leratiomyces squamosus (Pers.) Bridge & Spooner
The cap of Leratiomyces squamosus measures 2 to 6 centimeters in diameter. It begins with a conical shape, and later becomes convex or flat. Young specimens often retain remnants of the partial veil on the cap. The stipe, or stem, is 4 to 10 centimeters long and 0.3 to 0.7 centimeters wide, and has a persistent ring around it. Numerous scaly tufts cover the stipe surface below the ring. The gills are grayish when young, and turn purplish black as the mushroom matures. This species produces a purplish black spore print. Leratiomyces squamosus is most frequently found growing in mulch and forest habitats, and it typically occurs in alkaline environments.
