About Lepyronia quadrangularis (Say, 1825)
Lepyronia quadrangularis, commonly known as the diamond-backed spittle bug, is a species of spittle bug that occurs in many locations across the world. Adult individuals are brownish, with two oblique darker brown bands crossing their fore wings (called hemelytra). A small blackish curved marking is also present at the tip of each fore wing. From midsummer to late fall, females lay eggs between the leaf and main stem of grasses. Nymphs feed and molt while protected under spittle masses, and this species overwinters in the egg stage. Lepyronia quadrangularis is polyphagous, and feeds on a wide variety of grasses, shrubs, and herbs.
