This crab species has the scientific name Leptuca uruguayensis (Nobili, 1901). The adult carapace of this crab is typically 10 to 16.5 millimetres (0.39 to 0.65 inches) wide. Non-breeding males have a green carapace and a red major cheliped. When breeding, the male's carapace whitens, and the major cheliped may either stay red or also whiten. This crab is native to South America, with a range that includes Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. The species lives on silty sand or sandy silt soils that contain some organic matter. It prefers brackish and saline environments with moderate to high salinity.
