About Leptograpsodes octodentatus (H.Milne Edwards, 1837)

Leptograpsodes octodentatus reaches 60 to 70 mm (2.4 to 2.8 in) across the carapace, which has an oval shape. The species epithet octodentatus references four pairs of teeth along the sides of the carapace, which include the orbital angle; however, the fourth pair of teeth is very small, and some published references only recognize one tooth on this section of the carapace. The color of the carapace varies, and it has been described as grey and yellow, mottled green and brown, or purple and yellow. This species is able to produce sound through stridulation. This crab is typically found on seashores across southern Australia, including the states of Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia, where its range extends north to the Abrolhos islands. It tends to live close to fresh or brackish water, but always stays not far from the shore. It occupies shallow burrows located above the high tide line, and emerges at night to feed on rotting vegetation and animal debris. Its spawning season occurs in summer, between December and January.
