About Leptodactylus mystaceus (Spix, 1824)
Leptodactylus mystaceus, also known as the common toad-frog, is a species of frog in the family Leptodactylidae. This species is found in northern South America. It occurs across many parts of the Amazon Basin, including in numerous protected areas. It can be found in primary forest, secondary forest, forest-associated grasslands, and flooded areas. It inhabits ground-level areas close to temporary bodies of water, and has been recorded at elevations ranging from 0 to 1000 meters above sea level. For reproduction, male Leptodactylus mystaceus dig a hole in muddy ground, while females produce a foam nest to hold their eggs. After hatching, the tadpoles swim and complete their development in water.
