About Leposternon microcephalum Wagler, 1824

Leposternon microcephalum, commonly called the smallhead worm lizard, is an amphisbaenian species belonging to the family Amphisbaenidae within the reptilian order Squamata. This species is endemic to South America. Its geographic range covers southern Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. It can also be found in Itatiaia National Park, located between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, Brazil. Due to their underground fossorial lifestyle, strong bite, and defensive strategies, amphisbaenians generally have very few predators. Even so, some snake species have been recorded preying on amphisbaenians including Leposternon microcephalum. Leposternon microcephalum reproduces by laying eggs, meaning it is oviparous.
