About Lepiota castanea Quél.

The scientific name of this mushroom is Lepiota castanea Quél. Its cap ranges from broadly bell-shaped to flat, and is white with dark red-brown scales, reaching up to 3 cm in diameter. The gills are whitish, and the stem is typically chestnut brown, growing up to 8 cm long with an indistinct ring. The flesh is whitish and has a mild taste, and the spore print is white. This species grows in both coniferous and deciduous woodlands, and mostly occurs singly or in small groups. Like many other species in the genus Lepiota, Lepiota castanea Quél. contains potentially fatal amatoxins that damage the liver.
