About Lepidopsetta bilineata (Ayres, 1855)
The rock sole, Lepidopsetta bilineata (Ayres, 1855), is a right-eyed flounder. Its upper surface ranges in color from grey to olive to dark brown or black, with lighter or darker mottling, and is sometimes marked with yellow or red spots. The underside of the rock sole is light in color. Its dorsal and anal fins have dark blotches or bars, and may be yellowish near the tail fins. The caudal fin is convex, with a rounded or broadly V-shaped outline. It has a small mouth with fleshy lips, and teeth are more strongly developed on its underside. This species is commonly found in waters from the eastern Bering Sea to central California. Rock soles can reach a maximum overall length of 63.5 cm (25 in). Rock soles reach reproductive maturity between 4 and 7 years old, and spawn from winter through early spring. Their eggs are demersal and stick to the surface they are laid on, and hatching occurs between 6 and 25 days after laying.
