This species has the scientific name Lemuresthes nana (Pucheran, 1845), and is also commonly referred to as the Madagascar mannikin under the synonym Lepidopygia nana. It is a common estrildid finch species native to Madagascar. Its estimated global extent of occurrence ranges from 100,000 to 1,000,000 km². Additional common names for the species are Madagascar munia, bibfinch, African bibfinch, African parsonfinch, and dwarf mannikin. It occurs in subtropical and tropical dry forest, grassland, shrubland, and even artificial landscapes. The species has been evaluated as Least Concern for conservation status.
