About Leiopicus mahrattensis (Latham, 1801)

Leiopicus mahrattensis is a medium-small pied woodpecker with a pale head. It measures 17.5 cm (6.9 inches) in length and weighs between 28-46 grams (1–1.6 ounces). Its upper-parts are black, marked with heavy white spotting and barring. Its underparts are dark, streaked with dingy white, and have a distinct red belly patch. It has irregular brown patches on its cheeks and neck. Females of this species have yellowish coloration on both the crown and nape. Males have a scarlet nape and yellow fore-crown.
