About Leersia oryzoides (L.) Sw.
Leersia oryzoides is a grass species commonly known as rice cutgrass, or simply cut-grass. It is a widespread grass native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and occurs as an introduced species in many other regions including Australia. This is a rhizomatous perennial grass that grows to a maximum height of 1 to 1.5 meters. Its leaves can reach around 28 centimeters in length, and have very rough, minutely toothed edges. The inflorescence is a loose, open cluster of wavy, hairlike branches that hold rows of spikelets. Each spikelet forms a flat fruit with a rough, bristly awnless lemma, and has no glumes. Some spikelet branches develop within leaf sheaths and are cleistogamous. This grass is sometimes used for erosion control and wetland restoration.
