About Lechea cernua Small

Lechea cernua Small, commonly known as nodding pinweed and scrub pinweed, is a threatened perennial herb that is endemic to Florida, a U.S. state. This species typically grows in sandy openings within fire-maintained xeric Florida scrub habitat. It has a specific association with scrub-adapted oaks, including sand live oak, scrub oak, and Chapman's oak among others, as well as Florida rosemary. Its documented range is restricted to central and southern Florida counties, where it occurs along both the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and along the Lake Wales Ridge. An estimated 200 to 300 populations of this species are known across this range. It currently faces extreme pressure from habitat loss driven by urban sprawl and agricultural development.
