About Lecanora strobilina (Spreng.) Kieff.
This lichen species, currently accepted by the scientific name Lecanora strobilina (Spreng.) Kieff., is commonly called the mealy rim lichen. It is a crustose lichen belonging to the family Lecanoraceae. It was first formally described in 1827 by German botanist Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel under the name Parmelia strobilina. For a long time, this species was classified within the genus Lecanora. In 2025, the genus Zeora was resurrected to accommodate the former Lecanora symmicta species group, and this species was transferred to the genus Zeora under the name Zeora strobilina. Its known distribution includes North America and the Mediterranean region, and it has also become established in South America and the Galápagos. This species can be differentiated from closely related species such as Zeora confusa by the presence of the polyphenolic compound decarboxysquamatic acid, which is detectable via thin-layer chromatography.
