About Lasius brunneus (Latreille, 1798)

Lasius brunneus is a species of ant belonging to the genus Lasius. This ant is widely distributed across Europe, ranging from Sweden in the north to Anatolia in the south. In England, Lasius brunneus almost always nests in oak trees or rotting wood, and its foraging activity mainly occurs in trees. It has also been found nesting under stones and foraging on the ground. The species is thought to be underrecorded, but it is fairly common, especially in South East England. Worker Lasius brunneus are easy to identify because they are bicoloured, though they can be confused with the related species Lasius emarginatus. Nuptial flights have been recorded as early as May, taking place on warm days from early morning to early afternoon. Compared to queens of other Lasius species, Lasius brunneus queens are smaller. They are mostly a uniform dark brown colour, with a flattish, slim body appearance.
