The scientific name of this species is Lanius cabanisi Hartert, 1906. Like many shrike species, adult Lanius cabanisi have similar appearances between males and females, while juvenile birds have strikingly different appearances from adults. Adult Lanius cabanisi measure 26 to 30 cm (10 to 12 inches) in length, and weigh between 69 and 80 grams (2.4 to 2.8 ounces), with males averaging slightly heavier than females. They are large, robust birds. As indicated by their name, they have very long graduated tails, and the typical strong heavy bills of shrikes. Compared to Lanius collaris, Lanius cabanisi is more compact and has less slender feet.
