About Laniarius erythrogaster (Cretzschmar, 1829)
The black-headed gonolek, scientifically named Laniarius erythrogaster, is a bird species that belongs to the family Malaconotidae. It occurs in Burundi, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, all countries located in Africa. Its natural habitats include dry savanna, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland. This is a distinctively colored bush-shrike that is typically shy and retiring in behavior. It often becomes much bolder when it stays close to human settlements and in gardens. Black-headed gonoleks produce a very distinctive call that they perform in concert with their partner. The male utters a loud, clear, bell-like sound, and the female responds almost at the same time with a harsh grating call.
