About Lampyris raymondi Mulsant & Rey, 1859

Adult Lampyris raymondi reach an average size of around 20 millimetres (0.79 in). This species displays obvious sexual dimorphism. Females are typically longer than males, reaching up to 25 mm in length. Females are larviform, lack wings, and continuously glow, earning them the common name of glowworms. They use this bioluminescence to attract mates. Males are winged, with brown elytra that have a yellow border along the elytral suture. Their pronotum is slightly more elongated, and their abdomen is yellowish, with a very convex last dorsal segment. The body of larvae is made up of 12 bright black segments. Each segment has two whitish or pale pink spots on its rear edge, while the first segment (corresponding to the pronotum) has four spots total. This feature easily distinguishes L. raymondi larvae from those of Lampyris noctiluca, which only have two spots on the first segment. In spring, these predatory larvae can often be spotted walking on paths during daylight. This species is distributed in Bulgaria, Portugal, Greece, Spain, southeastern France (including Provence and the Alps), and Italy (including the Maritime Alps and western Apennines). It occurs at elevations up to 1,200 metres (3,900 ft).
