About Lamprotornis australis (A.Smith, 1836)

Burchell's starling, also called Burchell's glossy-starling, has the scientific name Lamprotornis australis (A.Smith, 1836), and is a species of starling in the family Sturnidae. This monogamous, and presumably non-migratory, species is native to dry and mesic woodlands and savannah in southern Africa. Its common name honors the English naturalist William John Burchell. This species occurs in Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is not found in miombo woodland, but does live in westerly gusu woodlands. In the Kalahari, these starlings associate with camelthorn trees and feed on the trees' flowers. Their overall diet includes flowers, fruit, and small animals. They breed during the summer months.
