About Lamprima aurata Latreille, 1817
This species of beetle has an oval, shiny body, with a body length ranging from 15 to 25 millimeters. Its coloration varies considerably, which has led many different authors to assign it multiple separate names. Males of this species are typically metallic golden green or yellow, and have colorful legs. Females may be blue, blue-green, or dull brown. Females are smaller than males, and males have larger, forward-extended mandibles that they use for fighting. Lamprima aurata is native to Australia. It can be found in Tasmania and south-eastern mainland Australia, where it inhabits dry sclerophyll forests. Among the five species that belong to the genus Lamprima, only two occur on the Australian mainland: L. aurata, and the closely related L. imberbis, which lives in northeastern New South Wales.
