About Lagarosiphon major (Ridl.) Moss

Lagarosiphon major (Ridl.) Moss is a monocotyledonous aquatic plant native to Southern Africa. Its common names are African elodea, curly waterweed, oxygen weed, and South African oxygen weed. This species is used as a freshwater aquarium plant, and it grows as an invasive plant in a number of countries. In New Zealand, it is listed on the National Pest Plant Accord, and it is classified as a noxious weed in the United States. On 3 August 2016, Lagarosiphon major was added to the European Union's List of Invasive Alien Species of Union concern; this means, among other regulations, that selling the plant anywhere in the European Union or dumping it into the environment is illegal. Within Ireland, this plant is found in parts of upper Lough Corrib in County Galway.
