About Lactuca hirsuta Muhl. ex Nutt.
Lactuca hirsuta, commonly known as hairy lettuce or downy lettuce, is a North American species of wild lettuce. It is widespread across much of central Canada, as well as the eastern and central United States. Its range extends from Ontario, Québec, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia in the north, south to Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. This species is a biennial herb belonging to the dandelion tribe of the daisy family. It grows from a taproot and can reach a maximum height of 200 cm (79 inches; 6.6 feet). The top of its stem produces a multibranched inflorescence that holds many flower heads. Each flower head contains 12 to 24 blue ray florets, and has no disc florets. Its fruit is a brown achene.
