In its native South Africa, this species is rare and its population is declining. It is naturally restricted to lowland, winter-rainfall areas that range from Cape Town north to Malmesbury, and is entirely endemic to the Western Cape Province. Its natural habitat includes lowland coastal sand Fynbos, as well as patches of Renosterveld and Strandveld.
