About Labidochromis caeruleus Fryer, 1956
The scientific name of this fish is Labidochromis caeruleus Fryer, 1956. FishBase records that this species reaches a maximum total length of 8.1 centimetres, which equals 3.2 inches. Other published sources report that this fish grows to a larger maximum size between 10 and 15 centimetres, or 3.9 to 5.9 inches. In terms of reproduction, Labidochromis caeruleus is a maternal mouthbrooder, just like Astatotilapia burtoni. As a maternal mouthbrooder, eggs are carried, hatch, and complete development inside the mother’s buccal cavity, also called the mouth, for approximately three weeks. This species is classified as ovophile. Males will dig a pit into the sand inside their established territory; the female lays her eggs inside this excavated pit. After laying, the female moves the eggs into her mouth, where fertilization occurs.
