About Krameria cistoidea Hook. & Arn.
Krameria cistoidea Hook. & Arn. is a perennial shrub belonging to the flowering plant family Krameriaceae. This species is endemic to northern and central Chile. One confirmed site where it grows is Cerro La Campana in central Chile, where it occurs alongside the Chilean Wine Palm, Jubaea chilensis. All members of the Krameria genus are perennial root parasites that grow on other plants. The flowers of this species have specialized glands called elaiophores, which produce a lipid. Bees of the genus Centris collect this lipid while pollinating the flowers. Biological effects from members of the Krameria genus come from the astringent compound rhataniatannic acid, which is similar to tannic acid. Krameria species are distributed across the Americas, and most are native to tropical regions.
