About Kolkwitzia amabilis Graebn.
Kolkwitzia amabilis Graebn. is an arching, spreading shrub with light brown flaky bark. It can grow taller than 8 ft (2.4 m), and is typically just as wide as it is tall. This species blooms in late spring. Its flowers are light pink when open, dark pink in bud, around one inch long, and bell-shaped (described as "tubular campanulate"). Like all members of the Caprifoliaceae family, its flowers grow in pairs, and they form numerous, showy sprays along ripened wood. The leaves are opposite, simple, and ovate, ranging from 0.5 to 3 in (1.3 to 7.6 cm) long, with smooth margins or a small number of sparse shallow teeth. The fruit is a hairy, ovoid capsule approximately 0.25 in (0.6 cm) long. Numerous cultivars have been developed for garden cultivation, and the cultivar 'Pink Cloud' has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
