Kohleria amabilis (Planch. & Linden) Fritsch is a rhizomatous tropical plant that reaches up to 60 centimeters (24 inches) in height. Its leaves are egg-shaped, velvety, marked with a silvery pattern, and measure 10–10.5 centimeters (3.9–4.1 inches) long. The plant’s brightly colored flowers are roughly 5 centimeters (2.0 inches) long, tubular, and slightly nodding. They are usually pink on the outside, with red or purple dots inside. The variety Kohleria amabilis var. bogotensis has dark green leaves and yellow and red-orange flowers. The flowering period of this species runs from late winter through spring and summer. These plants experience a seasonal period of leafless dormancy. This species is native to Honduras (located in Mesoamerica) and Colombia.
