About Kinosternon herrerai Stejneger, 1925

Herrera's mud turtle, with the scientific name Kinosternon herrerai Stejneger, 1925, is a species of mud turtle belonging to the family Kinosternidae. This species is endemic to Mexico. Its geographic range covers the Mexican states of Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. Its preferred natural habitat is permanent fresh water bodies, occurring at elevations between sea level and 1,150 meters (3,770 feet). Most aspects of courtship behavior in K. herrerai match the courtship behavior of other kinosternid species. Females of this species apparently reach sexual maturity when their straight carapace length is between 115 and 130 millimeters (4.58 and 5.12 inches). The estimated clutch size for this species ranges from two to four eggs, and a single individual may lay several clutches over one reproductive season.
