About Kinosternon chimalhuaca Berry, Seidel & Iverson, 1997

The Jalisco mud turtle, scientifically named Kinosternon chimalhuaca, is a species of mud turtle in the family Kinosternidae that is endemic to Mexico. It occurs in the Mexican states of Colima and Jalisco, where it inhabits freshwater environments such as swamps and quiet rivers. This species reproduces via oviparity, meaning eggs develop and hatch after being laid by the parent. The total population size of the Jalisco mud turtle has not been determined, and fewer than 20 individuals have been observed over the past twenty years. As this turtle is adapted to aquatic habitats, population decline is expected to occur as a result of habitat fragmentation.
