The Tabasco mud turtle, scientifically named Kinosternon acutum Gray, 1831, is commonly called pochitoque in Tabasco, Mexico. It is a small species of turtle in the family Kinosternidae. This turtle occurs in central Veracruz, Tabasco, northern Guatemala, and Belize. It inhabits small streams, marshes, and ponds. It is primarily carnivorous and nocturnal. While the species does not have a large overall range, it can be common at some locations within its range. In Tabasco, despite holding a special protected status, it is both an important element of local popular culture and an ingredient in traditional Tabasco gastronomy.
