About Kalophrynus baluensis Kiew, 1984

Kalophrynus baluensis is a stocky, short-legged frog. Females reach 39 mm (1.5 in) in snout–vent length, while males are slightly smaller. Its brown colouration provides ideal camouflage in the leaf litter of the forest floor, its native habitat. The natural habitats of this species are montane oak-chestnut forests, found at elevations between 1,300 and 1,800 m (4,300–5,900 ft) above sea level. Individuals are typically encountered on the forest floor. Male advertisement calls have been heard some distance from water, which suggests the species may breed in phytotelmata. There are no major identified threats to Kalophrynus baluensis, and the species is confirmed to occur within Kinabalu National Park. Even so, the total area of its distribution is relatively small.
