This perennial species is native to Atlantic Forest ecoregions of eastern Brazil, Misiones Province in northeastern Argentina, and Paraguay. It is cultivated and sold as a decorative potted plant, and is also planted as a feature plant in landscaping in warm temperate and subtropical climates.
