About Junonia grisea

Junonia grisea, commonly called the gray buckeye, grey buckeye, or Western buckeye, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is found in North America, in regions located west of the Rocky Mountains. Similar to the common buckeye, the gray buckeye is a brown butterfly that has eyespots on its wings; these eyespots work to distract predators away from the butterfly's body. Junonia grisea was previously classified as a subspecies of the common buckeye, Junonia coenia, under the scientific name Junonia coenia grisea. Its recognition as a distinct separate species was first published in 2018 by Dr. Jeffrey Marcus, an entomologist at the University of Manitoba, and Melanie Lalonde, a graduate student.
