About Junonia artaxia (Hewitson, 1864)

Junonia artaxia, commonly known as the African pansy or the commodore, is a species of butterfly that belongs to the Nymphalidae family. This species is distributed across eastern Angola; multiple regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo including Lomami, Kabinda, Lualaba, Shaba and Tanganika; Burundi; Kenya; southern and western Tanzania; Zambia; Malawi; Mozambique; and Zimbabwe. Its natural habitat is made up of Brachystegia woodland. Adult Junonia artaxia are in flight from August through March. This species has distinct seasonal forms. The caterpillars of Junonia artaxia feed on plant species from the Hygrophila genus.
