About Juncus torreyi Coville

Juncus torreyi Coville, commonly known as Torrey's rush, is a species of rush. It is native to North America, where it is widespread across the southern half of Canada, coast to coast in the United States, and throughout northern Mexico, growing in a wide range of habitats. This is a perennial herb that grows from rhizomes that produce associated tiny tubers. Its smooth stems reach a maximum height between 30 centimeters and around one meter. Its leaves range in color from green to pink or red, and grow up to 30 centimeters long. Its inflorescences hold many dense, rounded clusters, each containing up to 100 flowers. Each flower has narrow, pointed tepals that can be greenish, tan, or reddish, plus six stamens. The fruit produced is a pointed brown capsule.
