About Juncus maritimus Lam.

Juncus maritimus Lam., commonly called sea rush, is a rush species that grows along coastlines. It is sometimes treated as the same species as Juncus kraussii. It has a broad distribution across the western Palearctic realm, covering all of Europe, western Asia, and the Maghreb. According to Edward Catich, ancient Egyptians used Juncus maritimus to make writing brushes. Catich describes the brush-making process: the end of the rush was cut at a slant, and its fibers were split by chewing to produce a small chisel-shaped brush.
