About Juncus breweri Engelm.

Juncus breweri Engelm., commonly called Brewer's rush, is a rush species native to western North America. Its native range extends from British Columbia to northern California, where it grows in coastal habitats including beaches and marshes. This perennial herb grows from a tough rhizome that anchors it into sand and other unstable substrates. It produces slender stems that can reach up to 1.3 metres (4 ft 3 in) in length. Its leaves are bladeless, and are reduced to dark brown sheaths that wrap around the bases of the stems. The inflorescence is a cluster of flowers that grows out of the stem, accompanied by a single long, cylindrical bract that appears much like an extension of the stem. The flowers have purplish brown and greenish segments that are a few millimeters long.
