About Jovellana violacea (Cav.) G.Don
Jovellana violacea (Cav.) G.Don is a semi-evergreen upright shrub. It grows on red stems and bears oval, lobed leaves. It reaches a height of 1.5 to 2.5 meters and a width of 0.5 to 1 meter. This plant produces pale violet, bell-shaped flowers marked with dark purple spots, and it blooms in summer. This species is native to south-central and southern Chile. There are no known toxic adverse effects linked to Jovellana violacea. For cultivation, Jovellana violacea can be propagated from cuttings taken in summer. It requires loamy, well-drained soil and full direct sunlight. It grows well in both slightly acidic and alkaline soils. While it is somewhat hardy, it is not tolerant of below-freezing temperatures, so it needs shelter over winter. It is known to grow well when grown alongside Jovellana punctata, and it has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM). This plant is primarily used for ornamental purposes.
