About Japananus hyalinus (Osborn, 1900)
Females of Japananus hyalinus (Osborn, 1900) measure 5.5 mm in length, and can reach up to 6.5 mm; males measure 4.25 mm. The head tapers to an acute point, and both the head and prothorax are greenish yellow. The forewings are translucent, with reddish veins that are paler in males. When the insect is at rest, three narrow, beaded purplish brown bands run more or less straight across the wings, and these bands incorporate portions of the veins. Eggs are inserted into the nodes of young branches, which makes them very difficult to detect in dormant planting stock. This species typically has one generation per year, though it has two generations annually in Italy, and eggs overwinter. Nymphs have a sharply pointed shape at both the head and tail, and are frequently yellowish.
