This moth is found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The larvae of Janomima mariana feed on a wide range of grasses; confirmed specific host plants include species from the Bauhinia and Brachystegia genera, along with Pterocarpus rotundifolius and Miscanthus violaceus.
