The accepted scientific name of this species is Isognomon perna (Linnaeus, 1767), originally noted as Isognoma perna in the source description. This shelled organism resembles a miniature clam. Its coloration ranges from brown or light yellow to beige that is marked with brown stripes. It is commonly distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, with documented locations including Hawaii, Western Polynesia, Eastern Polynesia, Japan (to the north), Southern Africa (to the east), New Caledonia, and the Society Islands. This species lives in tropical climates at depths between 0 and 20 meters. Individuals use byssal threads to attach to rocks, reef flats, or the undersides of boulders. They are commonly found under rocks in shallow water, arranged in stacked layers one on top of the other.
