About Ischnoderma resinosum (Schrad.) P.Karst.
This is a description of the shelf fungus Ischnoderma resinosum. The fruiting body measures 7โ30 cm (3โ12 in) across, has a velvety texture, and is dark red-brown in color. As it ages, it darkens and develops distinct color zones. Its flesh ranges from whitish to brownish; when young, the flesh is watery, and it becomes corky as the mushroom matures. It has a sweet scent. Ischnoderma benzoinum is a similar species that has darker flesh. This fungus fruits on hardwood logs and stumps during autumn. It is a widely distributed species, with confirmed records from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. Young, soft specimens of Ischnoderma resinosum can be cooked and eaten, but the species becomes hard and unpalatable as it ages.
